Mr. Manfred Westphal is a very important hybridizer and grower of clematis in Germany. Pride of Place Plants Inc. is very pleased and proud to work with his fabulous Clematis creations!
Manfred Westphal’s company in Prisdorf, Germany has been steadily expanded in the last 20 years and produces more than 100,000 clematis in over 400 varieties annually. Six permanent employees belong to the staff and two more seasonal workers in the busy season.
Westphal Clematis Company was initially run as a nursery, but later became a nursery garden for ornamental plants and only in the 80’s it has been fully specialized in Clematis.
Manfred says, “after the 80’s began the great passion for collecting Clematis varieties. To this day we are constantly looking for new varieties and breed our own New clematis.”
History: Manfred’s clematis operations was founded in 1953 by Friedrich Westphal who has since passed in 1990. Clearly Manfred his son got the clematis bug as we say, and has continued on in a big way! The original nursery was in Quickborn, Pinneberg district of Germany. Initially, roses, conifers, heather, perennials and clematis were cultivated. Most sales were at weekly markets to supply the population. Supermarkets and shopping stores as we know them today did not exist back then. In the following years the weekly markets were abandoned.
The company moved in 1978 from Quickborn to Prisdorf and is there by the owner Friedrich “Manfred Westphal. The former estate was rebuilt in the 80’s into an 18 hole golf course and even then the affiliated nursery was part of it until today!
